Business cards as low-tech micro-adjusters

Fine-tuning the position of your tablesaw’s fence can be a hit-or-miss proposition if the fence isn’t equipped with a micro-adjusting mechanism.

Fortunately, help is as near as your wallet. Here’s what you need to do: Set the approximate location of your fence and lock it in place. Then clamp a wood block to the side of the fence opposite the direction you want to move it a hair or two. Unlock the fence, place a business card between it and the block, re-lock, and check its position. Add more cards as necessary. For super-fine adjustments use dollar bills or scraps of paper.
